In a big house in Frankfurt, Clara Sesemann waited impatiently for her new companion to arrive.
Clara was twelve years old.
She was a delicate childーher legs were so weak that she had to sit in a wheelchairーand she had no brothers or sisiters to keep her company.
Her father was a kind man, but he was away a great deal on business trips.
Clara's mother had died several years before, and the household was looked after by a very strict woman called Fräulein Rottenmeier.
At last Heidi and Dete arrived.
When Fräulein Rottenmeier saw Heidi she was not very pleased, as she thoughtHeidi would be far too young for Clara.
And when she discovered that Heidi could neither read nor write, she was furious.
But Dete explained that Heidi was a bright child and would learn quickly.
Then she said goodbye to Heidi and left.
