Once upon a time there was a king whose queen died young, and after a time he married.
The couple both had a daughter from their first marriage.
His daughter, Rashen Coatie, was good and beautiful, while her daughter was ill-featured and bad tempered.
The queen treated the king's daughter badly so that her own girl would gain.
To keep the peace, her husband the king turned blind eye to this ill-treatment, and Rashen Coatie ended up looking after king's cattle, while the queen's daughter stayed at home and wallowed in luxury.
The queen sent bad food for Rashen Coatie to eat to make the girl fall ill and die, but a fairy taught Rashen Coatie a spell.
If she said the magic words, a calf appeared with food as fine as any that was eaten in the king's palace.
