The Adventures of Toad (31)
An owl, swooping noiselessly, brushed his shoulder, making him jump.
A fox looked at him sarcastically and said,
"Hullo, washerwoman ! Half a pair of socks short this week ! Mind it doesn't occur again ! " and swaggered off, sniggering.
Toad looked for a stone to throw at him, but could not find one.
At last, cold, hungry, and tuired out, he sought the shelter of a hollow tree, made himself as comfortable a bed as he could, and slept soundly till morning.
The next morning, Toad was called early by bright sunlight streaming in on him.
