The Tortoise and the Hare (2) 

  The Hare strode up to the starting line waving and bowing to the crowd as though he were already the winner.



  The tortoise modestly took his place after first trying to shake the hare's hand like a good sport.



  The starter blew his whistle, the racers crouched on their mark, and at a blast from the starting gun, they were off.

  The hare was down the road like a smoking streak, his speed twirling the tortoise on his shell as if he were a spinning top.



  By the time the tortoise got himself in gear, the speedy hare was almost out of sight.

  " Never mind, " the tortoise told himself.
  " Straight and steady does it. Just keep going. "
  And he did, though even some snails passed him on the road.
