(1)DOWN THE RABBIT-HOLE
Alice was begginning to feel very tired of sitting beside her sister on the grassy bank with absolutely nothing to do.
Her sister was reading a book with no picture or conversation in it.
It looked very dull.
It was a hot day.
The sun was making her very stupid and sleepy.
She was wondering whether to get up and make a daisy chain, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.
" Oh dear ! Oh dear ! I shall be late ! " the White Rabbit said.
He took a watch out of his waistcoat pocket, looked at it and hurried on.
Alice had never seen a rabbit with a waistcoat before, nor one with a watch to take out of his pocket.
She jumped to her feet and ran after him across the field.

Fortunately, Alice was just in time to see the Rabbit pop down a large rabbit hole under the hedge.
In another moment Alice went after him, never thinking how she was oing out again.
The rabbit hole went on like a tunnel for some way, but suddenly Alice found herself falling down a very deep well.
She was falling slowly, so she had plenty of time to look around and see all sorts of interesting things along the way.
The maps and pictures and all kinds of books, jugs and bottles.
" I wonder how many thousands of miles I've fallen ? " she thought.
" I must be somewhere near the centre of the earth. Perhaps I'll fall right through to the other side ! "

But just then, thump, thump, thump, she landed on a heap of dry leaves, without hurting herself at all.
The fall was over.
To her great relief, ahead of her, at the end of a long passage, the White Rabbit was still in her sight.
Alice hurried after him.
" Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it's getting."
She was just in time to hear his murmur, before he turned a corner and disappeared.

(2) THE GOLD KEY
By the time Alice reached the corner, the White rabbit had gone.
He was no longer in sight.
She found heself in a long hall lit by lamps in the ceiling.
There wer doors all the way round, but they were all locked.
How was she going to get out this place？
She the saw a little table made of glass.
On top of it was a gold key.
But it was too small to unlock any of doors.
Then Alice noticed a low curtain.
Behind it she found a tiny door, only fifteen inches high.
To her delight the key fitted perfectly, she opened the small door.
Alice had to kneel down to look through the door.
There was a small passage, not much larger than a rat hole, that led to the loveliest garden she had ever seen.
Alice longed to be walking in it.
But she was too big to get her head through the doorway.
" Even if my head could through the door, " she told herself sadly, " my head would be little use without the rest of me. "
" I wish I could shut up like a telescope ! "

There didn't seem much point waiting beside the door, so she walked back to the glass table.
To her surprise, there, she saw a little bottle which had cerrainly not been there before.
Around its neck was a label with the larde words DRINK ME printed on it.
Alice took s sip.
The mixture inside was really very nice for it tasted of custard, cherry pie, toffee and hot butter toast, all Alice's favourite foods.
So she drank it up.
" What a curious feeling " said Alice.
" I must shutting up like a telescope !
And so she was.
She began to growing smaller and smaller.

Soon she was only ten inches high, just the right size to through the little doori nto the lovely garden.
But poor Alice !
When she got to the door, she realised that she had left the key on top of the glass table,and now she was too small to reach it.
She tried to climb up one of the table legs, but it was too slippy.
No matter how hard she tried she could not climb the table-leg to reach the goden key that lay on the glass table.
At last, tried out, she sat down and cried.
" It's no use crying, " Alice told herself sharply.
She took a deep breath.
Then she noticed a little glass box on the floor, just under the table.
Inside it was a very small cake with the wards EAT ME beautifully marked on it in currants. 
" Well, I'll eat it, " thought Alice.
" If it makes me larger, I can reach the key, and if it makes me smaller, I can creep under the door. So either way I'll get into the garden. "
She nibbled the cake, and soon she had finished it all up.

(3) THE POOL OF TEARS
Poor Alice !
She had no sooner finished the cake than she found herself shooting upward until her head struck against the roof.
Her feet were so far away that she wondered how she would get her shoes and stocking off and on.
Alice was more than nine feet tall !
Alice picked up the little gold key and hurried off to the garden door.
But poor Alice could only look into the garden with one eye, by lying down on the floor.
She sat down and began to cry again.
" What a great baby you are ! " she scolded herself, but she could not stop crying.
Soon there was a large pool of tears around her, reaching halfway down the hall.
After a while, pattering of feet in the distance.
Alice dried her eyes and saw the White Rabbit coming back.
He was carrying a fan and a pair of white gloves and muttering.
" Oh, the Duchess ! Oh, the Duchess ! Won't she be cross if i've kept her waiting ! "
" Please sir, could you help me ?"asked Alice timidly.

But when he saw her, the White Rabbit dropped his fan and gloves and scurried off as quickly as he could.
Alice picked up the things he had dropped.
It was very hot, so she began to fan herself.
She felt very strange.
" I'm not at all my usual self ! I don't feel ME anymore " she thought,
" Perhaps I've changed into somebody else ! I'll see if I still know the things I learned at school:
four times five is twelve, and five times six is thirteen...London is the capital of Paris, and Paris is the capital of Rome...That's can't be right ! she sobbed.
" I must be somebody else ! "
Then she noticed that she had managed to put on one of White Rabbit's gloves.
" I'm small again ! " she cried, and ran off to the garden door.
But now it was shut, and the gold key was back on the glass table.
" Now things are worse than ever ! she thought.
Her foot slipped, and splash !
She was up to her chin in salt water, in the pool of tears.

Just then she heard something splashing about.
Soon Alice found that she was not alone.
A mouse was swimming a little way off.
To Alice it looked as big as hipppotamus.
" Should I try speaking to the Mouse, " Alice asked herself.
The Mouse looked at her with curiousity and seemed to wink one of his little eyes, but he said nothing.
" Oh, Mouse, " she said politely, "do you know the way out of this pool ?
"
The Mouse did not answer.
" Perhaps it's French mouse and doesn't speak English, " thought Alice.

She only knew one sentence in French from school.
" Où est ma chatte？（私の猫はどこにいますか） ? " she asked hopefully.
The mouse nealy jumped out of water and seemed to quiver all over with fright.
"It must be a French Mouse, " Alice told herself, watching him swim away at great speed.
" That's how he knew 'chatte ' meant 'cat ' ーoh, dear ! "
" I beg your pardon ! " apologised Alice.
" I forgot mice don't like cats ! "
Alice followed him and they swam together to the shore.

(4)A CAUCUS-RACE
The pool was now getting very crowded with a strange, bedraggled collection of birds and animals that had fallen into it.
There was a Duck and a Dodo, a Lory and an Eaglet,and several other curious creatures.
" I do think we shuld all make for the shore, " Alice cried.
" I'll lead the way and all of you follow me ! "
What a funny looking party they were when at last they were on the shore.
The birds had sad-looking feathers and some of the animals had thier fur clinging close to them.
They were all drpping wet, cross and uncomfortable.
Alice herself was not happy as she sat looking at them.
But when she found herself talking to them it was as if she had known them all her life and she said as much.
" If you ask me," said Alice, after a short silence, " the most important thing is to do something to make us dry... "
" I know the very best way to get us dry, " said the Dodo suddenly.
" It simply can't fail... "
" What ? " asked the Eaglet.
" Tell us ! "
" It's a Caucus-race, " said the Dodo.

" What is a Caucus-race ? " Alice asked, not really wanting to know.
" The vest way to explain is to do it, " said the Dodo.
" I'll begin by making out the racecourse, in a sort of circle, the exact shape doesn't really matter. "
The Dodo then placed all the party along the course and told them to start running when they liked and leave off when they liked.
Alice and the Mouse watched them with interest.
After they had been running for half an hour and were quite dry again, the Dodo suddenly called out, " The race is over ！ "
And they all crowded round him, gasping and asking, " Who has won ？ "
This was a question Dodo could not answer immedately.
In fact he sat for a long time deep in thought.
At last he said, " Everyone has won, and all must have prizes. "

" But who is to give the prizes ? " several of the animals cried, looking anxious.
" Why she, of course, " said the Dodo, pointing to Alice, and the whole party at once crowded round Alice, calling out, " Prizes ! Prizes ! "
Poor Alice !
She had no idea what to do, and in despair she pulled out of her pocket a box of coloured sweets which she remembered her big sister had given her.
" Here you are, " she said rather shyly.
" There is one for each of you ! "
" What about you ? " the Mouse said suddenly.
" You must have a prize ! "
Alice shook her head.
" I haven't anything else in my pocketーonly a thimble ! "
" Hand it over, " said the Dodo.
" Give it to me. "
All the animals watched gravely.
The Dodo bowed and then solemly presented the thimble to Alice, saying, " We beg you to accept this most handsome thimble. "
When he had finished this short speech, everyone cheered.
Alice thought it was all very silly but she did not dare laugh, though she wanted to very much.
She bowed instead and thanked the Dodo.

The next thing was to eat the sweets.
Some of the big birds complained they could not even taste theirs.
Alice was surprised that the Mouse did not complain.
In fact, when she thought about it, she was quite surprised that the Mouse had joined the party.
" He must have forgiven me, " she decided.
The Mouse wanted to attract all the attention.
He looked first at Alice and then at the Dodo.
And the Dodo told everyone to sit a ring.
Then he turned to the Mouse and begged him to tell them a story.
" You could tell us something about yourself, " said Alice.
" Why you are so scared of you-know-what ? "
She broke off, not liking to mention the dreaded word CAT in case the Mouse rushed off again.
" Mine is a long, sad tale, " said the Mouse. turning to Alice and sighing deeply.
Alice had been looking at the Mouse's tail as he spoke.
" It is a long tail, certainly, " said Alice.
" I don't believe I have seen such a long tail. But why do you call it sad ? "
" I am not talking about my tail, " said the Mouse, beginning to look offended.
" Please don't take offence ! " Alice cried, sitting down close to the Mouse and taking hold of his long tail.
" You haven't even begun to tell us your story, and I'm sure we all want to hear it. "
" I find you very stupid, " exclaimed the Mouse, twisting round to glare at Alice out of bright little eyes.
" And I'll ask you to let go of my tail this minute, if you please..."
" You won't run away, will you ? " Alice asked.

But the Mouse only growled in reply and pulled his tail free.
When he began his story, Alice's idea of it was something like this:
" You are not attending," the Mouse said crossly.
" Yes, I am ! " Said Alice.
" I think you'd got to the fifth bend. "
" I had not ! " said the Mouse sharply.
" A knot ? " said Alice, always ready to help.
" Oh, let me help you to undo it ! "
But the Mouse was offended and would not stay to finish his story.
He got up and walked away.
If I had my little cat, Dinah, here, " Alice remarked, " she would soon fetch him back. She's a wizard at catching mice and little birds ! "
As she spoke the whole party got to its feet and began hurrying away.
Alice watched them go wishing she hadn't mentioned Dinah !

(5) RABBIT SENDS IN A LITTLE BILL
When all the animals had gone, poor Alice felt very lonly and she began to cry again.
In a liitle while, however, she heard pattering of liitle feet.
She looked up eagerly.
It was the White Rabbit torotting towards her, even more splendidly dressed and looking very anxiously.
" The Duchess ! The Duchess ! Oh, my dear paws !
She'll have me executed as sure as ferrets are feretts.
Where can I have dropped them ? "
Alice guessed he was looking for the fan and the white gloves.
It didin't take long the White Rabbit to notice Alice.
He called out to her in angry voice.
" Mary Ann, now what are you doing here ? Run home this moment and fetch me a pair of gloves and fan and be quick about it. "
Alice was so frightened by the Rabbit's angry tone that she ran off at once in the direction he was pointing.
And very soon she came upon a neat little house with a bright brass plate on the door.
As soon as She read the name W.Rabbit on the plate, she went in without knocking.

She hurried upstairs, hoping she wouldn't meet the real Mary Ann and be turned away.
By the time she found her way into the little room with a table by the window, she was beginning to feel ready for next adventure.
She picked up the fan and a pair of white kid gloves on the table and was just about to leave the room when she saw a little bottle that stood near the looking-glass.
Alice hesitated.
Then she unlocked it and put it to her lips.
" I do hope it makes me get bigger ! " she thought.
And so it didー sooner than she had expected !
She had to lie down with one foot up the chimny and one arm out of the window.
" Curiouser and curiouser ! " said Alice.
" I wish I hadn't drunk so much..."
Just then she heard a voice outside.
" Marry Ann, " said the voice, " fetch me my gloves at once. "
And there came a pattering little feet on the stairs.
When the White Rabbit found it couldn't get in because the door was blocked by Alice, he muttered that I'll have to get in by the window.
" Oh, no you won't, " she thought, and she suddenly spread out her hand and made a snatch in the air.
There was a shriek and a fall and a crash of broken glass.
Next came an angry voiceーthe Rabbit'sー" Pat ! pat ! Where are you ? "
" Sure I'm here, yer honour, digging..."
" Come and help me out of this cucumber frame, " said the Rabbit crossly.
" And tell Bill to fetch the ladder... "

" Pat, Pat, Digging for Apples, indeed ! " said the Rabbit angrily.
" Now tell me what's that in the window ? "
" Sure, it's an arm, yer honour. "
" An arm, you goose ! Who ever saw one that size ? Why, it fills the whole window ? "
" Sure, it does, yer honour. " said Pat.
" Well, it's got no business there, at any rate. Go and take it away. "
There was a long silence after this, and Alice could only whispers now and then; such as " Sure, I don't like it, yer honour, at all, at all !" " Do as I tell you, you coward ! "
She waited fr some time without hearing anything more; at last came a rumbling of little cartswheels, and the sound of a many voices all talking together.
Alice tried to pick up the words.
" Where's the other ladder ? Bill's got to the other."
"Bill, here, put them up at this cornerーNo, tie them together first with a rope ーthey don't reach half high enough yetーOh, they'll do well enoughーHere Bill ! catch hold of this ropeーwho's go down the chimney ?ーMind that loose slate"
Someone shouted, "Here Bill ! Master says you're to go down the chimney ! "
" Oh, So Bill's got to come down the chimney, " said Alice to herself.
Alice drew her foot as far down the chimney as she could, and waited for a moment to give Bill time to climb the ladder.
When she heard a little animal (she couldn't guess of what sort it was ) scratching and scrambling about in the chimney almost above her, she gave one shrap kick up the chimney, and waited to see what would happen next.

The first thing Alice heard was a general chorus of " There goes Bill ! "
Then the Rabbit's voice alone.
" Catch him, you by the hedge ! "
Then silence, and then another confusion of voiceーHold up headーDon't choke himーHow was it, old fellow ? What happened to you ? Tell us all about it ! "
Last came a Little feeble, squeaking voice. (' That's Bili ' thought Alice)
" Well. I hardly knowーall I know is, something comes at me like a Jack-in-the-box, and up I goes like a sky-rocket ! "
" So you did, old fellow ! " said the others.
" We must burn the house down ! " said the Rabbit's voice.
Alice called out as loud as she could, " If you do, I'll set Dinah at you ! "
There was a dead silence instantly.
Alice thought to herself, " I wonder what they will do next ! If they had any sense, they'd take the roof off. "
After a minute or two, Alice heard the Rabbit say, " A barrowful will do. to begin with. "
" A barrowful what ? " thought Alice.
But she had not long to doubt, for the next moment a shower of little pebbles came rattling in at the window, and some of them hit her in the face.
She shouted out " You'd better not do that again ! "
Her voice produced another dead silence.

Alice noticed with some surprise that the pebbles were all turning into little cakes as they lay on the floor.
" If I eat one of these cakes, it's sure to make some change in my size," she thought.
So she swallowed one of the cakes.
To her delight she began shrinking at once, and as soon as she was small enough to get through the door, she ran out of the house.
Outside she found a crowd of little animals and birds.
" There she is !, " they all made a rush at Alice.
She ran off as hard as she could, and soon found herself safe in a thick wood.
" The first thing I've got to do is to grow to my right size again, "she thought, " and the second thing is to find my way into that lovely garden."
While she was peering about anxiously among the trees, she heard a shrap bark just over her head and she looked up in a great hurry.
An enormous puppy was looking down at her with large round eyes, and feebly stretching out one paw, trying to touch her.
Alice picked up a little bit of stick and held it out to the puppy.
The puppy jumped into the air at once with a yelp of delight and rushed at the stick.
Alice dodged behind a great thistle, to keep herself from being knocked over.
The moment she appeared on the other side, the puppy made another rush at her stick.
It seems game of play with puppy.
At last the puppy sat down a good way off, panting, with its tongue hanging out of its mouth, and its eyes half shut.
This seemd to Alice a good opportunity for making her escape.
So she set off at once and ran till she was quite tired and out of breath.
When at last she stopped, the puppy's bark sounded quite faint in the distance.
" And yet what a dear little puppy it was ! " said Alice, as she lean against a buttercup to rest herself.
There was a large mushroom growing near her, about the same height as herself.
When she stretched herself up on tiptoe, and peered over the edge of mushroom, her eyes immediately met those of large blue caterpillar that was sitting on the top with its arm folded.
He quitely smoking a long hookah that is a sort of long, curly water pipe.
At first the Caterpillar took no notice of her or of anything else.

(6) Advice from a Caterpillar
The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence.
At last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and asked her in a sleepy voice.
" Who are you ? "
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation.
Alice replied, rather shyly.
" IーI hardly know, sir. At least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since them. "
" What do you mean by that? Explain youself. "
" I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir. Being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing. "
" You ! " said the Catterpillar, " Who are you ? "
" I Think you ought to tell me who you are, first. " said Alice.
" Why ? " said the Caterpillar.
Here was another puzzling question and Alice could not think of any good reason.
As the Catterpilar seemed to be in a very unpleasant state of mind, she turned away.
" Come back ! " the Caterpillar called after her.
" I've something important to say ! "
This sounded promising, certainly.
Alice turned and came back again.
" Keep your temper, " said the Caterpillar.
" So you think you're changed, do you ? "
" I'm afraid I am,sir." said Alice.
" I can't remember things as I used and I don't keep the same size for ten minutes together ! "
" Can't remember what things ? "said the Caterpillar.
"Well, I've tryed to say " How doth the little busy bee, " but it all came different ! " Alice replied in a very melancholy voice.
" Repeat, " You are old, Father William, " said the Caterpillar.
Alice folded her hands, and began:ー

" You are old, Father William, " the young man said,
" And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your headー

Why, I do it again and again. "
" You are old, " said the youth, " as I mentioned before,
And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the doorー
Pray, what is the reason of that ? "
" In my youth, " said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
" I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointmentーone shilling the boxー
Allow me to sell you a couple ? "
" You are old, said the youth, " and your jaws are too weak
For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beakー
Pray how did you manage to do it ?
" In my youth, " said his father, " I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life. "
" You are old, " said the youth, " one would hardly suppose
That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your noseー
What made you so awfully clever ? "
" I have answered three question, and that is enough, "
Said his father; " don't give yourself airs !
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff ?
Be off, or I'll kick you down stairs ! "
" That is not said right, " said the Caterpillar.
"Not quite right, I'm afraid, " said Alice timidly.
" Some of the words have got changed. "
" It is wrong from beginning to end, " said the Caterpillar decidedly.
There was a silence for some minutes.
The Caterpillar was the first to speak.
" What size do you want to be ? " it asked.

" Well, I should like to be a little larger, sir, if wouldn't mind, " said Alice, " Three inches is such a wretched height to be. "
The Caterpillar drew itself up to its full height, which was exactly three inches tall.
" It is very good height indeed ! "said the Caterpillar angrily.
In a minute or two the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth and yawned once or twice, and shook itself.
Then it got down off the mushroom, and crawled away into the grass.
As it went, the Caterpillar remarked,
" One side will make you grow taller and the other side will make you grow shorter. "
" One side of what ? The other side of what ? " asked Alice.
" Of the mushroom, " said the Caterpillar and a moment later it was out of sight.
Alice looked thoughtfully at the big mashroom for a minute, trying to make out which were the two side of it.
At last she she stretched her arms round it, and broke off a bit of the edge with each hand.
A morsel from the left hand sent her shooting upwards.
When she looked down, all she could see was an immense length of neek, which seemed to rise like a stalk out of a sea of green leaves that lay far down below her.
" What can all that green stuff be ? " said Alice.
She was just bending her long neck when a large pigeon flown into her face, and was beating her violently with iits wings.
" Serpent ! " screamed the Pigeon.
" i'm not a serpent ! " said Alice, " Let me alone ! "

" I've tried every way, and nothing seems to suit them. " said the Pigeon.
" I have no idea what you're talking about, " said Alice.
" I've tried the roots of trees, and I've tried banks, and I've tried hedges, the Pigion went on, " but those serpent ! There's no pleasing them. "
Alice was more and more puzzled, but she thought there was no use in saying anything more.
"As if it wasn't trouble enugh hatching the eggs, " said the Pigeon, " but I must be on the look-out for serpents night and day ! Why, I haven't had a wink of sleep these three weeks ! "
" I've very sorry you've been annoyed, " said Alice, who was beginning to see its meaning.
" But I'm not a serpent, I tell you ! Iー I'm a little girl."
" No, no ! You are a serpent, " said the Pigeon, " There's no use denying it. I suppose you'll be telling me next that you never tasted an egg ! "
" I have tasted eggs, certainly, " said Alice, who was a very truthful child, but little girls eat eggs quite as much as serpents do, you know. "
" And if I was looking for eggs, I shouldn't want yours. I don't like them law. "
" I don't beleive it, " said the Pigeon, " You are looking for eggs."
"Be off, then ! " said the Pigeon and it settled down again into the nest.
After a while Alice remembered that she still held the piece of mushroom
in her hands and she carefully nibbling first at one and then at the other.
She growing sometimes taller and sometimes shorter, untill she had succeed in bringing herself just down to her usual height.
She set off through the woods.
Afer a time she came suddenly upon an open place, with a little house.
" Whoever lives there, I was much too large to get into it, " thought Alice.
" I was frighten them out of their wits ! "
So she began nibling at the bit of mushroom in her right-hand again, until she considered she was just right size for the little house.

(7)PIG AND PEPPER
For a munute or two, she stood looking at the house and wondering what o do next.
Then suddenly footman in lively came running out of the wood(she considered him to be a footman because he was in lively:otherwise, judging by his face only, she would have calld him a fish. )
※footman:
制服を着た)従僕 《来客の案内，食堂の給仕，車のドアの開閉などを受け持つ》
He tapped loudly at the door with his knuckles.
The door opened immediately by another footman in lively,with a round face, and large eyes like a frog.
The Fish-Footman produced a great letter, nearly as large as himself and handed it to the Frog-Footman.
" For the Duchess. An invitation from the Queen to play croquet, " he said in a solemn tone.
The Frog-Footman repeated the same words.
Then they both bowed low, and their curls got entangled together.
Alice laughed so much at this.
So she had to run back into the wood to fear hearing her voice.
When she next peeped out, the Fish-footman was gone.
The Frog-Footman was sitting on the ground near the door, dropped the letter on the step, staring stupidly up into the sky.
Alice ventured to show herself.
She went timidly up to the door and knocked.

" There's no sort of use in knocking, " said the Foot-man.
" First, because I'm on the same side of the door as you are; secondly, because they're making such a noise inside, no one could possibly hear you. "
No doubt there was a most extroordinary noisegoing on withinーa constant howling sneezing, and every now and then a great crush, as if a dish or kettle had been broken to pieces.
" Please, can you tell me, " said Alice, " how Am I get in ? "
" There might be some sense in your knocking, " the Footman went on.
"I shall be sit here till tomorrow, or next day, maybe."
" How I am to do ? " asked Alice, in a louder tone.
" Anything you like, " said the Footman.
" Oh, there's no use in talking to him, " said Alice desperately.
And she opened the door and went in.
The door led right into a large kitchen, which was full of smoke from one end to the other.
The Duchess was sitting on a three-leged stool in the middle, nursing a baby.
The cook was learning over the fire, stirring a large cauldron which seemed to be full of soup.
" There's certainly too much pepper in that soup ! " Alice said to herself, as well as she could sneezing.
There was certainly too much of it in the air.
Even the Duchess sneezed occasionaly.
The only things in the kitchen that did not sneeze, were the cook, and a large cat which was sitting on the hearth and grinning from ear to ear.

She was not quite sure whether it was good manners for her to speak first, but she said, " Please would you tell me why your cat grins like that ? "
" Because it's a Cheshire cat, " said the Duchess, " and "that's why. Pig！"
The last words was adressed to the baby, not to Alice.
So she took courage, and went on, " I didn't know that Cheshire cats always grinned. In fact, I didn't know that cats could grin. "
" They all can, " said the Duchess.
At this time, the cook took the cauldron of soup off the fire, and at once set to work throwing everything within her reach at the Duchess and the Babyーthe fire-irons came first, then followed a shower of sauce-pans, plates, and dishes.
The Duchess took no notice of them even when they hit her.
" If everybody minded their own business, the world would go round a deal faster then it does, " the Duchess said in a hoarse growl.
" Oh, don't bother me, " said the Duchess.
And she began nursing her child again, singing a sort of lullaby to the baby and giving a violent shake at the end of every line.
" Speak roughly to your little boy,
And beat him when he sneezes:
He only does it to annoy,
Because he knows it teases. "
CHORUS
(In which the cook and the baby joined):ー（）
" Wow ! wow ! wow ! "
While the Duchess sang the second verse of the song, she kept tossing the baby violently up and down.
The poor little thing howled so much.
" I speak severely to my boy,
I beat him when he sneezes:
For he can thoroughly enjoy
The pepper when he pleases ! "
CHORUS
" Wow ! wow ! Wow ! "
" Here, you may nurse it a bit, if you like ! " the Duchess said to Alice, tossing the baby at her as she spoke.
" I must go and get ready to play croquet with the Queen, " and she hurried out of the room.

The cook threw a flying-pan after her as she went out, but it just missed her.
Alice caught the baby with some difficulty, as it was a queer-shaped little creature and held out its arms and legs in all direction.
The poor little thing was snorting like a steam-engine when she caught it, and kept doubling itself up and straightening itself out again.
It was really looking very odd.
As soon as she had made out the proper way of nursing it, she carried it out into the open air.
" If I don't take this child away with me, " thought Alice, " they're sure to kill it an a day or two : wouldn't it be murder to leave it behind ?"
She said the last words out loud, and the little thing grunted in reply.
" Don't grunt, " said Alice.
The baby grunted again, and Alice looked very anxiously into its face to see what was the matter with it.
There could be no doubt that it had a very turn-up nose, much more like a snout than a real nose.
Also its eyes were getting extreamly small for a baby.
There was no doubt it was changing.
" But perhaps it was only sobbing, " she thought, and looked into its eyes again, to see there were any tears.
No, there were no tears.
" If you're going to turn into a pig, my dear, " said Alice seriously, " I'll have nothing more to do with you. Mind now ! "
Alice was jut beginning to think to herself, " Now, what am I to do with this creature when I get it home ? "
When it grunted again so violently, she looked down into its face in some alarm.
Sure enough this time there could be no mistake about it.
It was neither more nor less than a pig, and she felt that it would be quite absurd for her to carry it any further.
So she set the little creature down, and felt quite relieved to see it trot away quietly into the wood.
" If it had grown up, " she said to herself, " it would have made a dreadfully ugly child, but it makes rather a handsome pig, I think. "
She thought about the pig for a while.
And then she noticed the Cheshire Cat sitting on the bough of a tree a few yards off.
The Cheshire Cat only grinned when it saw Alice.

It looked good-natured, she thought.
" Cheshire Puss, " she began, rather timidly, "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here ? "
" That's depends a good deal on where you want to get to, " said the Cat.
" I don't much care whereー"
" Then it doesn't matter which way you go, " said the Cat.
Alice tried another question, " What sort of people live about here ? "
" In that direction, " the Cat said, waving its right paw round, " lives a Hatter.
And " in that direction, " waving the other paw, " lives a March Hare. Visit either you like. They are both mad. "
" But I don't want to go among mad people, " Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that, " said the Cat.
" We're mad here. I'm mad. You're mad ! "
" How do you know I'm mad ? " said Alice.
" You must be, " said the Cat, " or you wouldn't have come here. "
" To begin with, " said the Cat, "a dog's not mad. You grant that ? "
" I suppose so, " said Alice.
"Well, then, " the Cat went on, " you see, a dog growls when it's angry and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now, I growl when I'm pleased and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore, I'm mad. "
" Do you play croquet with the Queen today ? "
" I should like it very much, " said Alice.
" But I haven7t been invited yet. "
" You'll see me there, # said the Cat, and vanished.

Alice was not much surprised at this, she was getting so used to queer things happening.
While she was looking at the place where it had been, it suddenly appeared again.
" By-the-bye, what became of the baby ? "said the Cat.
" I'd nearly forgotten to ask. "
" It turned into a pig, " Alice quitely said, just as if it had come back in a natural way.
" I thought it would, " said the Cat, and vanished again.
Alice waited a little, half expecting to see it again, but it did not appear.
So she walked on in the direction in which the March Hare was said to live.
" I've seen Hatters before, " she said to herself.
" The March Hare will be much the most interesting, and perhaps as this is May it won't be raving madーat least not so mad as it was March. "
" Did you say pig or fig ? " 
She looked up, and there was the Cat again, sitting on a branch of a tree.
" I said pig, " repled Alice.
" And I wish you wouldn't keep appearing and vanishing so sudden. "
" All right, " said the Cat.
And this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin.
"Well,I've often seen a cat without a grin, but never seen a grin without a cat ! It's a most curious thing I ever saw in my life ! " thought Alice.
She had not gone much farther before she came in sight of March Hare's house.
She thought it must be the right house, because the chemney was shaped like ears and the roof was thatched with real fur.
" I've never seen such a funny house in all my life. Suppose somebody mad must live here, " she told herself.
" I almost wish I'd gone to see the Hatter instead ! "
