Mother Snow (1) [Mother Snow]

Mother Snow (1)

Long long ago, in a tiny cottage in a small village there lived a widow who had a daughter and a stepdaughter.

Her own child was lazy and ugly but she loved her the most.

The stepdaughter was beautiful and had to do all the hard work.

Every day the poor girl had to sit on the edge of the well in the square, and spin and spin, till her fingers bled.

One day, while she was washing the blood from her hands, the spindle fell into the well by accident and sank to the bottom.

With tears in her eyes, she ran and told her stepmother what had happened.

The stepmother was very angry, and said, " You silly girl ! Now go and get it out. "

The girl went back to the well.
She did not know what to do.

She was so unhappy she jumped into the well to try and get the spindle.

Down, down she sank to the very bottom.

All at once she found that she was in a beautiful meadow where the sun was shining, and thousands of pretty flowers were growing.

She walked along a small pathway, and came to a baker's oven full of new bread.

The bread cried out, " Oh, take us out !  Take us out, or we shall burn."

" Indeed I will, " cried the girl, and then she pulled all the fresh brown loaves out of oven.

Mother Snow (3)

Soon she came to the apple tree which cried, " Oh, shake me ! Shake me. My apples are all quite ripe ! "

Nut the lazy girl only said, " Oh no I won't. Some of your apples might fall on my head. "
And she walked on past the poor tree.

When she came to Mother Snow's house in the mountains she was not afraid for she had already heard of her big teeth.

She walked right up to the old woman and asked to be her servant.

The first day she worked quite hard, because she thought of all the gold she would get.

But on the second day she began to be lazy, and on the third day, she did not get up at all.
She did not even shake Mother Snow's bed, and the feathers did not fly about.

Then she went on till she came to a tree covered with apples.

The tree cried, " Oh, shke me ! Shake me. My apples are all quite ripe. "

" Indeed I will, " cried the girl.
She shook the tree again and again till there was not a single apple left on its branches.

Then she picked all the apples up, and piled them neatly into the great heap.
Then she went on her way.

She was in the mountains now and the air was much colder.
At last she came to a little house.

An old woman peeped out of the window.
She had such a large teeth that the girl was frightened, and was about to run away .

But the old woman called out to her, " What are you afraid of dear child ?  Come and live here with me. If you will do the work about the house, I will be very kind to you. Only you must take care to make my bed well. You must shake it till the feathers fly about. Then children down on earth will say snowflakes are falling, for I am Mother Snow. "

The old woman spoke so kindly that the girl said, " I will gladly work for you. "

The girl did her work well, and each day shook the bed so hard, that the feathers flew about like snowflakes.

She was very happy with Mother Snow.
The old woman was never angry with her and gave her nice food to eat every day.

But when the girl had been a long time with the kind old woman, she began to feel homesick.

At last she said to Mother Snow, " You have been very kind to me, but I am longing to see my home and my friends again. "

Mother Snow said, " I am pleased that you long for your home, and as you have worked for me so well, I myself will show you the way. "

She took the girl by the hand, and led her to a large doorway.

Suddenly a heavy shower of gold fell over the girl.
It stuck to all her clothes, so that she was completely covered with gold, from head to her feet.

" That is your reward for having worked so hard, dear child, " said the Mother Snow.
" And here is your spindle which fell into the well. "

The girl walked through the doorway, and found herself once more upon the earth, not far from her stepmother's house.

As she crossed the square, the cock standing by the well crowed:
" Cock-a-doodle-doo !
Your golden girl's come back to you ! "

The stepmother and her daughter rushed out.
When they saw the girl covered with gold, they were astonished, and,
of course, they were very kind to her.

The girl told them what had happened to her.

As soon as the stepmother heard it she wanted her own daughter to have the same good luck.

So she made her ugly daughter sit on the well and spin.

The lazy girl did not spin fast enough to make her fingers bleed, so she pricked her finger with a thorn until a few drops of blood stained the spindle.

At once she threw it into the water, she jumped in after it.
Just like her stepsister, she found herself in a beautiful meadow and walked along the very same path.

When she reached the oven the bread again cried, " Oh, take us out ! Take us out, or we shall burn ! "

But the lazy girl only answered, " Oh, no I won't. I'm not going to get my hands dirty. "
And she walked on past the burning bread.

The Mother Snow (8 完)

Mother Snow was soon tired of this.
" You must go away, " she said.

The lazy girl was glad.
She was sure that now she would have the shower of gold.

Mother Snow led her, too, to the great doorway.

While she was standing beneath it, a big cauldron of black pitch was emptied over her.
" That is your reward for your work, lazy girl, " said the old woman, as she shut the door.

So the silly selfish girl went home, covered with sticky pitch, from head to toe.

As soon as the cock standing by the well saw her, he crowed:
" Cock-a-doodle-doo !
Your dirty girl has come home, too ! "

The pitch stuck hard to the poor girl.
The stepmother scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed her daughter, but it never came off.

Then the stepdaughter scrubbed her sister and all at once the dirty pitch came off.
The Stepmother thanked the good girl and the families lived together happily ever after.
