  When they were past, Toad had a hearty laugh.

  But soon stopped laughing when he came to consider that it was now very late and dark and cold, and he was in an unknown wood, with no money and no chance of supper and still far from home.

  He dared not leave the shelter of the trees, so he struck into the wood, leaving the railway far behind him.
  He found the wood strange and unfriendly.

  An owl, swooping noiselessly, brushed his shoulder, making him jump.

  A fox looked at him sarcastically and said,
 "Hullo, washerwoman ! Half a pair of socks short this week ! Mind it doesn't occur again ! " and swaggered off, sniggering.

  Toad looked for a stone to throw at him, but could not find one.

  At last, cold, hungry, and tuired out, he sought the shelter of a hollow tree, made himself as comfortable a bed as he could, and slept soundly till morning.

  The next morning, Toad was called early by bright sunlight streaming in on him.

The Adventures of Toad (32 完)

　　Sitting up, he rubbed his eyes and wondered for a moment where he was ; then he remembered  ー he was free !

  Free ! 
  He was warm from end to end as he thought of the jolly world outside, waiting eargerly for him to make his triumphal entrance, anxious to help him and to keep him company, as it always had been in days of old before misfortune fell upon him.

  He shook himself, combed the dry leaves out of his hair with his fingers and marched forth into the comfortable morning sun.
