The Pied Piper in Hermelin ハーメルンの笛吹き男(1)

This is the town of Hermelin.

It is a good town, but for one thing.

Rats !

Big rats and little rats.

Rats in the shops and rats in the houses.
There are rats everywhere !

The people of Hermelin want to get rid of the rats.

One man says, " What can we do ? There are rats everywhere ! "

The people say, " We will gp to see the mayor. He will help us. "

The people go to see the mayor.
" Please ge rid of the rats, " they say.

The mayor says, " I don't like rats, but what can I do ? I cannot make the rats go away. "

" You will have to get rid of the rats, or we will not have you for mayor, " say the people.

Then they go home.

A strange man comes to see the mayor.
The strange man is the pied piper.

The pied piper says to the mayor, " I can help you if you like. Will you give me some money if I get rid of the rats for you ? "

The mayor says, " Yes, I will give you all the money you want if you can meke the rats go away. "

The Pied Piper is pleased.

The Pied Piper plays a tune.

A rat comes running after him.

Then two rats come.

The pied piper plays on.

Soon all the rats in town are running after the pied piper.

Big rats and little rats.
Fat rats and thin rats.
They all ike the tune that the pied piper is playing.

They all come running after him.

The pied piper comes to some water.
He keeps on playing his tune.

All the rats jump into the water and drown.



The pied piper says to the mayor, " The rats have gone, and I have to go soon. Please give me my money."

"No, " says the mayor.
" I want to keep the money. The rats have gone, and you can go. We don't want you here. "

" Give me the money, please, " says the pied piper.
" Or I will play a differnt tune ! "

" Play away, then, " says the mayor.

" You are no danger to me, and I will not give you the money you want. "

The pied piper plays a different tune.

In the houses, the children stop playing games.

They like the turn that thepied piper is playing.

All the children come to look for the pied piper.
They run after him.

Boys and girls, big children and little ones.
They all come running after the pied piper.

The pied piper comes to the water, but the children do not jump in.
The pied piper goes on and the children run on after him.

They came to a mountain, but they do not stop.

The mountain opens up.



The pied piper keeps on playing the tune that the children like.

He goes into the mountain, and the children go in after him.

There are trees and flowers in the mountain.

One boy is lame, and cannot keep up with the pied piper.

He wants to go in, but the mountain closes up.

He has no one to play with.

All the children are in the mountain.

The mayor looks everywhere for the pied piper and the children, but it is no good.

They have gone.

He should have paid the pied piper.
